A Few Tips:
While quoting a property recently we got a chuckle when the client stated they were offered a Lifetime warranty from the business on the workmanship of the job.  In all the years we have been in business this has been unheard of but this also turned out to be a company showing photos of award winning properties which were only awarded by their company directly.
(Update: In December 2010 we received a call about a company offering the "lifetime" warranty and apparantly it would not honor a quoted price and another took the deposits but never showed up) Be vary thorough in your decision process and if it sounds too good to be true or others are not offering it...perhaps you should re-think your selection.

Our point is that there are ways to say things that seem more legit than not.  We have been in business sincs 1993 and infact started it ourselves shovelling company parking lots by hand and praying every day our truck would start...times have changed by being honest and fair.

Any company can give you a warranty and the length will mean a hill of beans if they refuse to come out and fix it...it is just that simple.  The best tool to finding a contractor is to talk to people that have used them or go and see the work yourself. We offer 2 years and show references at over seven years old!!

  • Acquire at least three service quotations
  • List everything you want your job to have in a "Wish List".  Use that list to ask of the Contractors quoting and specify the products you want quoted if you want a true apples to apples comparison.  Our experience has been that if we lose a job it is generally to a company using inferior products and always to a non-comaparable base depth and material.
  • Analyze all incoming quotes and prepare questions you need answers to in reference to the quotation, before calling a meeting.
    1. Be sure to do your homework on the products quoted to you ensuring that the quality is good and equal in all respects.
In doing so you will be more organized and prepared for the questions you will be asked by the contractor.  You will be able to take your time and research the information given to you, knowing that you have comparable quotes.
    2. Research the contractors to find out how long they have been in business and what they do.
    3. Do not be afraid to ask the questions you need, and look for the answers that put you at ease.
    4. Feel out the contractor for how you think you will work with them throughout the project.
    5. Knowing the products and services you are attempting to purchase, will make the process so much easier for you in the end.
    6. What is the actual quote for, and what will the process be?
    7. What type if any agreements will be in place?
    8. What types of products will be used?  How much foundation or base will you actually receive? It is too late to find out that the base was skimped out on when your project moves with the changing of the seasons.
    9. What is the recommended installation by the Manufacturer?  Does that interlock really need to be raised as a trip edge and left as a finished product 1/4" higher than the stair as a good many contractors will do to accommodate settling...settling?  There should be no need to leave trip edges...the base should be adequate. Is the quotation covering all of these adequately?
    10. What is the Contractors warranty, and what is the Manufacturers warranty?  Contractors and Manufacturers are entirely separate entities.
    11. Is the contractor a member of Landscape Ontario?  Call them and check out the member if you like.
    12. What will their staff wear?  Will they wear proper company identifying attire, or will they be scantily clothed?
    13. Do they have available references for recent and PAST jobs, and go to see them in person.
    14. Do your homework up front, and you will reap the benefits down the road in avoiding potential, and costly repairs.
